In 1985, the miraculous French pianist Michel Petrucciani signed with a newly relaunched Blue Note Records and recorded his label debut Pianism, an album that underscored the arrival a distinctive new talent. His 2nd Blue Note release, Power Of Three, presented Petrucciani in a duo with guitarist Jim Hall and a trio that added saxophonist Wayne Shorter. Recorded live at the 1986 Montreux Jazz Festival, the album captured a magical evening of music-making by three virtuosos. The 5-song LP features the trio on a trio of originals—Shorter’s “Limbo,” Petrucciani’s “Morning Blues,” and Hall’s “Bimini”—while the duo is heard on Hall’s “Careful” and a stunning version of Ellington’s “In A Sentimental Mood.”
