Haynes was born in Boston and already played professionally in his teens. His early engagements were with Lester Young and Charlie Parker, and from then he went on to play his scattering accents with everyone from Miles Davis and Thelonious Monk to John Coltrane and Bud Powell. Ever-evolving, in the 1960s he played with avant-gardists like Eric Dolphy and Archie Shepp. He is one of the most recorded drummers in history with over 1300 appearances, and was inducted into the drummer hall of fame in 1999. Haynes was awarded a Grammy for Lifetime Achievement in 2012.
