Blue Note, 1968
Hammond B3 organist Big John Patton was deep in a groove by the time he put his 7th Blue Note album That Certain Feeling down on tape in March 1968. Recorded with a four-piece band featuring Junior Cook on tenor saxophone, Jimmy Ponder on guitar, and Clifford Jarvis on drums, the album put an emphasis on Patton’s writing with the organist penning five of the set’s six songs. Patton had begun exploring new textures and forms on his previous albums Let ‘Em Roll and Got A Good Thing Goin’, and here his music became even more expansive from the deep pocket funk of “String Bean” to the modal vamps of “I Want To Go Home” and “Early A.M.” to the sinuous grooves of “Dirty Fingers” and “Daddy James.”
