Recorded at the famous Greenwich Village club, this was Coltrane’s first live album and first to feature all four members of his classic quartet with McCoy Tyner, Jimmy Garrison and Elvin Jones. “Softly, as in a Morning Sunrise” is a jaunty standard with Jones deft on brushes and Coltrane blowing a mellifluous soprano; but it’s the two originals that really deliver. “Spiritual” is a loping modal meditation with Eric Dolphy contributing a loquacious bass clarinet. The 16-minute “Chasin’ The Trane” is blazing hard bop with Coltrane’s endless stream-of-consciousness solo almost reaching free-jazz intensity while always grounded by Jones’s muscular, crashing swing
