As jazz albums go, Lee Konitz's Motion lives up to its name: a fluid, spontaneous session that ranks among the saxophonist's finest works. Recorded and released in 1961, the Creed Taylor-produced session brought together a first-time trio of Konitz, bassist Sonny Dallas and drummer Elvin Jones—a fertile ground for intuition over preparation and, with no piano, plenty of space for Konitz to explore his cool-toned, lyrical phrasing against Jones’ dynamic, polyrhythmic drumming and Dallas’ steady bass lines. The result is five conversational, often abstract takes on standards including "All of Me," "I Remember You" and "You'd Be So Nice to Come Home To."
