Blue Note, 1968
Blue Note was the home of numerous great Hammond B3 organists throughout the ‘60s, and in 1968 a new talent joined the ranks with the debut album by Reuben Wilson. On Broadway introduced a distinctive stylist whose punchy hard-grooving approach enlivened a diverse set of material including songs made famous by The Drifters (“On Broadway”), Aretha Franklin (“Baby I Love Love”), Marvin Gaye (“Ain’t That Peculiar”), and Ahmad Jamal (“Poinciana”). Wilson’s sole original tune “Ronnie’s Bonnie” is a highlight of the set with its confident strut showcasing the strengths of this dynamic band with Trevor Lawrence on tenor saxophone, Malcolm Riddick on guitar, and Tommy Derrick on drums.
