Harpist Brandee Younger’s second album for Impulse! finds her paying tribute to one of the undisputed pioneers of jazz harp, Dorothy Ashby. Younger tackles a selection of tunes by Ashby, updating her funkified arrangements with a 21st century sound influenced by hip hop and R&B, while sumptuous string arrangements lend a widescreen, epic vibe. Throw in some transporting originals and Youngers’ gorgeous solo harp interpretation of Stevie Wonder’s “If It’s Magic,” and you’ve got an album to luxuriate in.
