Haden grew up in a professional musical family in Iowa. He moved to Los Angeles to study at Westlake College of Music, and some of his earliest recordings were with Paul Bley. In 1959 he recorded “The Shape of Jazz to Come” with Ornette Coleman, and turned jazz on its head. Haden went on to work with innovators like Pat Metheny and Keith Jarrett, and formed the Liberation Music Orchestra with Carla Bley. Later Haden taught at California Institute of the Arts and received a Grammy Lifetime Achievement Award in 2013. He passed away aged 76 in Los Angeles.
