Gregory Porter (born 1971) is one of today’s most successful jazz singer-songwriters, known for his smooth, baritone voice.

Porter’s musical personality straddles soul, gospel and classic jazz songbook styles. He cites Nat King Cole, Donny Hathaway and Bill Withers as significant influences. After an injury curtailed the sporting hopes of this young football scholar, Porter began to sing in the Brooklyn restaurant where he worked with his brother. His musical reputation grew and he was cast in the original Broadway production of “Ain’t Nothin’ But the Blues”. He has also staged a musical and released an album in tribute to his musical hero Nat King Cole.
