Few have shaped the contemporary jazz scene of the Nordics like Jan Garbarek (born 1947).

Jan Garbarek

The Norwegian jazz saxophonist, flautist, and composer is renowned for a sparse, atmospheric sound and ethereal improvisations. Garbarek combines elements of jazz, world music, and Nordic folk influences into a haunting and meditative sonic texture full of space and tranquillity. A staple of the ECM label throughout his whole career, Garbarek has worked extensively with pianist Keith Jarrett, guitarist Bill Frisell, German bass innovator Eberhard Weber, British vocal Quartet The Hilliard Ensemble, and many more. With his sharp-edged tone, knack for silence and endless curiosity, Garbarek continues to be an inspiration for artists from all ages and genres.
