Born in Brooklyn with Haitian roots, Charles grew up singing in church and studied flute at LaGuardia. As a guest she has appeared with Nicola Conte’s Big Band and the virtual band Gorillaz. As a solo artist, she has released an album under her pseudonym D’Flower which allowed her to explore more experimental production. Her album “Y’all Don’t (Really) Care About Black Women” on Verve in 2021 saw her reimagine classics by Sarah Vaughan, Ella Fitzgerald and other iconic singers, perfectly balancing tradition with modernity, and finding her own place within the jazz continuum.
