Sons of Kemet was a London-based jazz collective spearheaded by saxophonist Shabaka Hutchings (born 1984).

Sons Of Kemet

The four-piece’s distinctive style came from an unorthodox line-up of saxophone/clarinet (Hutchings), tuba (Oren Marshall/Theon Cross), and two drummers (Seb Rochford/Tom Skinner/Eddie Hick) playing at the same time. During the eleven years of their existence, Sons of Kemet had been on the forefront of a new London jazz sound that mixed political awareness with elements of rave culture and the radical heritage of spiritual jazz. Oftentimes, their rousing sounds were accompanied by singers and spoken word poetry. In 2022, Sons of Kemet officially disbanded.
